Control cables for engines

Find your throttle and shift cable by engine brand, cable brand or model. Compare series, end fittings and lengths in feet and metres from Imnasa, Riviera, Ultraflex, Multiflex, Teleflex and Mercury/Quicksilver.

For a new installation, measure the actual route from control to engine and consult the selected series guide. Allowance for outboard movement depends on the manufacturer: Dometic / Teleflex specifies 4 ft (1.22 m); Multiflex specifies 3 ft (0.91 m). Round up to the next available length. When replacing a correctly installed cable, use its overall length or marking without adding this allowance again. Ordering length is not a separate sheath measurement.

How to choose and measure the cable

Ordering length is shown in feet and metres. 1 foot = 0.3048 m: 9 ft = 2.7432 m (approximately 2.74 m). Displayed metres are rounded to two decimals; the reference identifies the commercial length in feet.

For a replacement Riviera or Ultraflex cable, the manufacturer specifies measuring the complete cable from tip to tip, including its ends, and checking the length printed on the sheath. Do not measure only the outer jacket. If the previous routing was correct, do not add the engine movement allowance again to the old cable length.

For Imnasa references, feet identify the nominal ordering length in the catalogue. The consulted documentation does not provide a separate sheath length or a measurement datum for each terminal. First check the series and length printed on the existing cable. If you only know the sheath length, confirm the reference before ordering; do not apply a fixed terminal allowance.

Sheath length, diameter and stroke

Outer sheath length, sheath diameter and working stroke are different measurements. A sheath diameter of 8.6 mm describes its outside thickness; an 80 mm stroke describes the useful terminal movement. Neither is the cable length. Separate sheath lengths are not published for these references and cannot be calculated by subtracting the stroke.

Before ordering, compare both end fittings, threads or attachments, cable series, control, engine, year and required stroke. Adaptors may be needed. Matching engine brand and length alone does not establish compatibility.
