The marine VHF radio is one of the most important pieces of electronic equipment on board any vessel, whether recreational or professional. Its main function is to enable reliable two-way communication between ships, with ports, marinas, maritime rescue services, and coastal stations, overcoming the limitations of mobile phones in maritime areas where coverage is poor or nonexistent.

What is a VHF radio and how does it work?
VHF stands for Very High Frequency, and these radios operate on a band specifically designed for marine communications. Through an antenna, they transmit and receive short- to medium-range signals via line of sight, allowing for clear and direct communication on the water.

The international emergency channel is Channel 16, which must be constantly monitored on all vessels equipped with VHF. This channel is used for distress calls, safety alerts, and urgent communications.

Safety: DSC and Distress Calls
Most modern VHF radios are equipped with DSC (Digital Selective Calling), a feature that allows you to send an automatic distress signal by pressing a single button. This message includes key information such as the MMSI identifier and GPS position, facilitating a faster response from rescue services.
